Q. How can I know God’s will for my life? I have just finished my freshman year in college and I have still not decided on a career.

A. It just may be that you are searching for the wrong thing. Let me suggest that a Christian is not seeking a career, nor an occupation, nor a job but rather, God’s divine calling for his life. Maybe the Lord is waiting for you to recognize fully His claims upon your life and service.

However, having been an educator for many years, I’ve discovered your concerns are rather common. When we are uncertain we often want to give up or wait. I do not believe this is wise. Two texts I believe must guide you.

  1. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
  2. “‘All things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28).

When, as an immature 16-year-old, I first attended college, I did not know where God was leading me. At one point I wanted to quit, but I thank God for a mother who urged me otherwise.

Even when you are not sure of where you are headed, keep moving forward. Daily place your life in the hands of God and you will be wonderfully surprised at where He guides you. God does not always reveal in advance where He is leading us, but just as surely as He led Abram to Canaan, so He wilI be guiding your life.
