Vol.1 No.10
Q. Is there any difference between rock music and Christian rock?
A. Yes and no. Secular rock doesn’t claim to be promoting moral values, praising God, or helping people experience a deeper commitment to God. Christian rock does. Secular rock often contains lyrics that are openly evil, violent, and blasphemous. Christian rock is performed under the guise of righteousness and purity.
Rock music is inherently evil. The words alone don’t make it ugly. The arrangements of rhythm, tempo, volume, chords and lyrics combine to create “anarchy.” Rock music composers have no qualms in telling us that their music is revolutionary. They want to overturn the traditional values of religion, family life, government, morality and decency. This, they tell us, can be effectively done with the rhythms themselves, without a single lyric.
Despite their “righteous lyrics,” Christian rock songs are just as inherently evil as secular rock songs. In fact, Christian rock is blasphemous because it mixes good and evil and then calls it good!
Right from the beginning of human history Satan has depended upon the admixture of truth and error, good and evil. You will remember that in the Garden of Eden it was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In his first successful temptation, Satan spoke considerable truth. He made it clear that if Eve ate of the fruit she would know good and evil. There is no question that she knew much more about evil after she ate of the tree rather than beforehand. So successful was his first deception that throughout the history of the world Satan has rarely presented error and evil alone. He has chosen to mix the good with the evil. In so doing he has trapped many into his destructive web. If we had a glass of pure distilled water and put a couple of drops of strychnine in it, it would be wholly unfit to drink. So to mix Christian words with Satan’s music is spiritually deadly. Let us choose music and lyrics which reflect the beauty that heaven has provided for each one of us. (How can you tell if contemporary Christian music is safe for Christians? We will be featuring this in an upcoming Last Generation issue.)
